Problems of the Older Building Stock

The great need for housing after the Second World War and the relatively limited financial resources available led to housing and urban development concepts that are largely characterized by industrial production. They are less differentiated in their design than in earlier decades.

This film discusses and illustrates the problems of older buildings concerning healthy living and energy efficiency.

Energy Consumption, Costs & Impact on the Climate

Typical for buildings constructed before the first German Heat Insulation Ordinance released in 1977 is above all the high energy consumption. It is caused by insufficiently insulated and leaky outer shells.

Due to the high energy costs - the increase from 1989 to 2000 was about 400% - and environmental pollution, energy-saving measures have become a current topic. They not only considerably reduce heating costs but also limit environmental disasters caused by the so-called greenhouse effect.

Without the reduction of greenhouse gases, the environmental damage caused by floods, storms, and drought, for example, will continue to increase. The UN estimates that the resulting costs will exceed 300 billion euros per year in the future.

Even in 2020, the building stock in Europe will still be responsible for more than one-third of greenhouse gas emissions.
